UNYP 2010 symposium
Meeting Crisis with Wisdom: Charting our way forward in politics, business, finance, law & education
Date: October 8, 2010
Venue: The NYU Conference Center in Prague 1 (Male namesti 11, Richtruv Dum in Old Town)
Purpose/Objective: To convene a one day international interdisciplinary conference of scholars, professionals and civic-minded peoples who meet to share perspectives and lessons learned from past mistakes, particularly those made in the 1st decade of the 21st century, and to identify principles and practices which can enable us to progress and do better in the decade just begun.
As Stanford economist Paul Romer has said, "A crisis is a terrible thing to waste." Crisis shows us the weak points in our systems – of thought and administration. In the 2nd decade of the 21st century we face crises in many fields: a global recession, a changing climate; a loss of faith in government and business brought on by unethical practices in professions ranging from medicine to accounting; international terrorism; corporate mismanagement and financial collapse; a lack of credit and deep debt; pandemics; resource scarcities and ecological degradation; a decline of civil liberties and the rule of law; a loss of civic-mindedness and public engagement. How did we get here? And more importantly, how do we move forward from here?
Participants from varied countries and disciplines will discuss the challenges that have arisen in their particular fields, and will offer suggestions for change and improvement – in their fields, and in ways that transcend the conventional disciplinary boundaries. The aim is to develop ways to restore public engagement, faith and trust in the institutions that affect our lives.
Four panels will be convened – each with 2-4 speakers and a moderator. Speakers remarks will be brief (10-15 minutes max.) so that ample time is left for questions from the moderator and the audience. Panelists are invited and encouraged to prepare abstracts, papers, power points and/or outlines, which may be distributed before and/or at the symposium. Thank you in advance for your time, thought, energy and support. We look forward to seeing you on Friday October 8, 2010.
